Family Photoshoot in Florence: Finding the Right Balance Between Beauty and Comfort

We often receive requests from families traveling from English-speaking countries who wish to have a family photoshoot in Florence, surrounded by its Renaissance beauty and iconic landmarks. And we completely understand — Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. However, it’s also one of the most visited, and the large crowds of tourists can sometimes make the experience less enjoyable, both for our clients and for us as photographers.

Beating the Crowds

Unless it’s summertime and we can start at sunrise — as we did in this early morning photoshoot in downtown Florence— we usually recommend avoiding the most crowded streets and squares. Iconic spots like Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi, or Piazza del Duomo are filled every day, all year round, with thousands of tourists and locals. Trying to capture a family in pose from a distance with a telephoto lens, as we used to do even just ten years ago, has become quite a challenge.

Instead, we suggest exploring quieter, alternative locations just outside the city center. This allows everyone to relax, have fun, and truly enjoy the experience — which, for us, always comes first. The best photos are often the result of a calm, cozy, and family-like atmosphere. That’s the real starting point for beautiful memories and genuine portraits.

Our Favorite Spot Above the City

When clients really want to include Florence in their background, one of our favorite places to shoot is around San Miniato al Monte. The panoramic viewpoint in front of the church offers a spectacular view over the city, and from there, we can move to several nearby spots with different settings — from elegant stone stairways to soft green gardens.

Even though this area can sometimes get busy, it’s never as crowded as Piazzale Michelangelo or the historic center, and the variety of backgrounds makes it perfect for anyone who wants to bring home an image of Florence without the stress of the crowds.

To ensure the best experience, our family photoshoots usually last at least one to one and a half hours. We dedicate our full attention to one client per day, allowing us to take advantage of the best light and stay fully inspired.
